Keep the level of competition clear

Nawettan is an important part of community football in The Gambia. Super Nawettan is a zonal competition: a zone’s representative side should not automatically be treated as the same thing as one neighbourhood club. Read each competition’s rules and team list for its own edition.

A documented snapshot: 2017

The GFF’s 2017 activity report records an October Super Nawettan involving 14 zones. It identifies Foni and Kombo East as joining the 12 established participants for that edition. The published draw includes places such as Banjul, Bakau, Brikama, Gunjur, Lamin and Sukuta, alongside Serrekunda zones and other communities.

That report is evidence about 2017. Its sponsor, number of zones, organising officials and competition arrangements should not be carried forward as current information without a newer source. The document does not by itself establish a precise founding date for all nawettan football.

The work around the match

A community football history can ask who organises a fixture, how supporters travel and what makes participation possible. Those questions help a club notice work that does not appear on a score sheet. Invite local people to describe their experience and identify when and where it happened.

For a classroom comparison, put “club”, “zone”, “league” and “national team” on separate cards. Ask learners to explain the difference and find an example with a dated source. A player may appear in more than one context; that does not make the competitions interchangeable.

Before attending an event

Use a current announcement from the organiser for the venue, kick-off time and entry arrangements. Historical results in this guide are not a fixture service. If you are producing a community notice, print its date and replace it when the event has passed.
